Membaca kisah tiga beradik ini begitu mengesankan. The book, Under the Hawthorn Tree, is a gripping tale of childhood bravery during one of the saddest times in Irish history. The plot involves three Irish children trying to survive, with no parents to take care of them. The three children are faced with great heart ache and suffering during the devestation of the Famine.

This book This year i travelled to Ireland and fell in love with this beautiful country. It’s about three kids who fight for their lives and are determined to find their relatives. Parents watched their babies waste away and if they did not starve then they were at risk of dying from the dreadful fever.

My favourite book in the world. It has been made a supplementary curriculum reader in many schools and is also used by schools in Northern Ireland for EMU Education through Mutual Understanding projects.

I like stories with strong female characters who face reality in an intelligent way instead of like those ridiculous movies with girls running in the swamp in heels, always falling down, and screaming and whining.

Not me actually, but my great-grandmothers and their children. Children of the Famine 1. And their individual paths in life. See details for description of any imperfections.

Under the Hawthorn Tree

During the Great Famine in Ireland in bsjo s, three children are left alone and in danger of being sent to the workhouse, so they set out to find the great-aunts they remember from their mother’s stories.

The book would be quite suitable for KS2 children as it is an engrossing read and is part of our history in Ireland.

Their goal is to reach the town of Castletaggart where their mother’s aunts Lena and Nano live. I feel this book would be great for children aged depending on their level of reading and I think they would benefit from the story because it gives a fantastic depiction, through the eyes of the children, of Ireland during the devestation of the famine and all the suffering the people went through.
