Joan D. Vinge is an American science fiction author. She is known for such works as her Hugo Cat[edit]. Psion (); Catspaw (); Dreamfall (). The “abused teen with psychic abilities” was done many times in the 80s when this was published but few did it as well as Vinge. And Vinge allows him to be that. I couldn’t put it down.

At the time, I was relatively new to sci-fi and I fell in love. As well, answers may be filled in. However, I didn’t like it as much as I remembered liking it. Best Science Fiction Novels And while Cat’s own experiences may be a bit hard to relate to, the hits that he keeps taking seem to make him a character that you can not only identify with but also cheer on.

He enters therapy and training to learn to use his talent, and meanwhile, he forms uneasy relationships with the others in the group–a telekinetic named Ardan, a telepath named Derezady, an empathic teleporter named Jule–and he belongs to something for the first time in his life, even though there’s still plenty of drama. The characters fascinating, often bizarre and seldom shown as totally white or black.

It adds a little more dimension to the book before the second book. One of these days, he won’t live through it. That’s makes them even more terrifying.


He never knew he was half Hydran, but this explains a lot about his life. Unfortunately, the journey is short, because these characters appear only in Psion, Catspaw, Dreamfall, and the short story Psiren, found in the anthology Phoenix in the Ashes and the Kindle edition of Psion. I know she’s won prestigious awards, bu I always think Joan D. Violence is not simply an action piece; it’s insight into Cat’s social status and his efforts to put his past–and his overwhelming feelings of helplessness–behind him.

I loved it then and it has only improved with age. She is known for such works as her Hugo Award-winning novel The Snow Queen and its sequels, her series about the telepath named Cat, and her Heaven’s Chronicles books. Catspaw is the second book in the Cat series, so read Psion first. Usually a middle book suffers from being neither the start nor the end of a story. Seeking assassins, Cat discovers a mystery that could vjnge him his future.

Then I stop and think about it and realize that that person wouldn’t be able to get out of bed after three chapters. Anyway, this contains some interesting ideas, and is a decent bridge between Psion and Dreamfallvonge it’s not that pleasant to read. I vingw still lose vingr in this story. Others have given plot synopses, so I won’t bother here, but I will point out that I periodically return to the trilogy, treating the books like old friends.
