Greetings, I was wondering if any of you have practice the less well known Katas for Judo? Are you tested in these styles? Mostly it has helped me prepare for non competition defense. They all have something to teach. So, I’ve trained in nage, katame, nage ura, katame ura, goshin, go, and itsutsu, as well as some non-Japanese kata, namely the rensa and hikomi no on, having been tested on the first five.

Did they help you in competition? But are great for understanding certain body mechanics and whatnot.

Itsutsu is just for fun but it did teach me how to dive and roll at significant speed and height. I feel that it has significantly improved my ground game and the throwing practice is good.

I believe [but do not profess to know] many schools do not teach these aspects of Judo because they might not be allowed in competition or are non-competitive in nature. The world is more than just a 10m square covered with tatami. Some throws are basically useless in competitive setting.

It’s eye opening and interesting. I’d say your Judo becomes more Judo during Kata than Randori or any other form of practice. Almost forgot, yes I am tested on them.
