The narrator leaves the shepherd and returns home, and later fights in the First World War. I prefer longer and more complex. Then again, sometimes you need a bit of encouragement, and certainly this short story has a message to deliver and captures the landscape of Haute Provence with great sensitivity.

As each day passes and the tireless shepherd sows his seeds and acorns across the land, his sparse surroundings are eventually transformed into a lush and thriving forest. Simple is often effective, if not quite as interesting from a literary perspective. A slim book, almost a short story, but incredibly inspiring. Reading it in my backyard, albeit on a beautiful day, in Meriden, CT, left me feeling that it is a quaint fable. In the letter, he describes how the afbres was translated in a multitude of languages, distributed freely, and therefore was a success.

The contrast with destruction is important, since the narrative is twice interrupted — significantly, if discreetly — by world wars.
