William Weaver’s excellent translation won a National Book Award I’m finding that I may not really be conveying just how enjoyable these semi-abstract stories — personal interactions playing out ri a cosmic scale — really are. All eleven of these tales are good, but if I had to pick a top-three-in-no-particular-order, they would be: I rarely read anything as creative as this, I mean the book’s narrator is someone or something? Reading these stories by Calvino I couldn’t help but think of Borges constantly. Actually the whole collection felt like Borges to me, but if Borges had decided to write his stories based on science instead of about books, history and arcane knowledge.
